Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is diverse both economically and demographically. Each year, I try to find new and innovative ways to improve my teaching to benefit the needs of all my students.
After experiencing a pandemic, I have found that the social-emotional (SEL) skills of my students are essential to learning and life outcomes.
I would like to promote these skills in my classroom through a variety of read-alouds and novels to support self management, social awareness, and responsible decision making. My students will then have an opportunity to grow and turn their limitations into strengths in all academic areas.
My Project
Because of our ever-changing world, teachers need to find ways to put the social and emotional learning (SEL) of our students at the forefront in education. One way to do this is through literature. Read aloud stories with SEL lessons help students engage in meaningful conversations that they can connect with and gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
My goal this year is to build the library in my classroom to include a more culturally diverse collection of books that I can use to integrate SEL and growth mindset into all academic areas.
I believe that these resources will help students develop healthy identities, achieve personal goals as well as boost academic performance. Read alouds before math, social studies, or writing lessons are an invitation to welcome children into the world of literacy and relevance. It becomes a risk-free learning environment for students to be more creative with their thinking, question, talk openly and simply enjoy new material in a fun way.
