My 3rd grade class consists of 31 students in a public school setting from a middle class suburban neighborhood. Compared to the rest of the country, our students could be considered fortunate, but the reality of budget cuts, limited parent involvement and lackluster fundraising has left the staff in a difficult situation. We have growing demands, year after year, with noticeably shrinking support. We are greatly behind when it comes to technology and our digital learning needs. Currently we only have 1 computer lab for our K-5 school (1 hour time block each week) and 1 computer in the classroom students have access to. In regards to my class specifically, I have 1 mainstreamed student with autism, 4 other special needs students and a wide range of learning abilities including mid to high achieving students.
