I am fortunate to be an ESL professional who teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) to students at one of the most culturally diverse schools in the State of New York. My third grade students are from countries such as Bangladesh, China, Yemen, Colombia, India, Pakistan, and the Philippines. They are enthusiastic learners who want to be successful in school but sometimes have difficulty transitioning between an English based curriculum at school and their native language at home.
This year one of my top goals is to promote the essential academic connection between school and home. Some parents are concerned that since they do not speak English they cannot help with their child’s English based education. However, research shows that parents who read to their children, even in their native tongue, noticeably improve their child’s literacy skills. Also, students who read well in their native language are able to make significant gains in learning the English language.
A multilingual library in languages such as Bengali, Spanish, Arabic, Tagalog, Urdu, Punjabi, and Chinese will advance three major criteria in strengthening the school / home connection. First, it will support and foster my students' native and English language based studies. The books from this library will be lent to students to take home and share with their families. These books will be read by the student and parent in both English and their native language. Second, the multilingual library will help students develop the requisite vocabulary and necessary literacy skills for success at later grade levels. Thirdly, the library will promote and engage academic discussion at home between the parent and student while maintaining the student’s native language.
Your help will make it possible for my students to get the needed support at home in order to succeed while preserving their native language. A multilingual library will be consistently used and truly cherished by my students and their families. Finally, this library will foster the relationship among my students, their families, and myself, as we work towards amplifying student achievement.
