My Project
Often my students get so used to having adult support for so many areas of their educational experience that they don't get enough practice being independent. We target a variety of independent skills such as self-help, play, functional tasks, and previously mastered work tasks. These tasks vary drastically depending on the student. Most tasks are a variety of sorting, matching, and assembling tasks. Some students work on things like sorting colors, shapes, etc. Other students move on to more academic tasks such as sequencing numbers, letters, and patterns.
To be successful, it is important to keep our independent work tasks fresh and novel to continue to challenge them and keep their interest during times when it is incredibly easy to lose focus and rely on adult support.
Many of the tasks we utilize for independent work are foundational skills to job skills later on or transfer to being able to complete chores at home. For example, teaching students to set the table or roll silverware can transfer to a variety of settings and situations. My students are capable of so much, and it is our goal to continually remind them of their brilliance and allow them to flourish and be proud of what they can do all on their own!
