This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with a very vibrant bunch of 1st graders. There is never a dull moment in our classroom. They are more like one big family, than they are classmates. They argue with one another, but they care for and love one another even more. All 18 of them bring so much joy to my life in their own special way and I want nothing more than to provide them with a rich academic learning environment.

My fabulous firsties continue to shine despite some of the struggles that they face both in and out of the classroom.

I work in a Title One school where all of my students receive free or reduced lunch. My students and I are very close, not just because we see each other everyday, but because we have something special in common. We all speak two languages, both Spanish and English. My students were so happy to find out that I shared their home language with them and in return they have felt safe to be open and honest with me about everything. I honestly could not have asked for a better group of fabulous firsties!

My Project

Having these whiteboards, word builders, practice cards, and Complete Hot Dots(r) Phonics Program will make a huge difference in my students' abilities with phonics and phonemic awareness. All of my students are bilingual with Spanish being their first language. Because of this, they are faced with the challenge of being fluent in reading, listening, speaking, and writing a language that is brand new to both them and their parents.

My students have a passion for learning, but they are struggling with phonics.

My school does not currently have a school wide phonics program. Being a second year teacher I am still trying to build my phonics tools and resources but supporting a class of 18 gets very expensive. These resources would greatly affect my ability to teach my fabulous firsties foundational skills to help my students become life long readers.
