My Project

A few years ago I read Bryan Stevenson's Just Mercy and it transformed my opinion of justice. Then I read The Sun Does Shine, written by one of the men that Stevenson helped to exonerate. For years I have wanted to incorporate one of these books into my 10th grade curriculum. The Sun Does Shine was just approved as a 10th grade text, so I'm working to gather multiple classroom sets.

I hope to teach The Sun Does Shine in place of To Kill a Mockingbird this year.

While I love To Kill a Mockingbird, I've found that the age of the text, and its length (350 pages) keep many students connecting with the book. Anthony Ray Hinton's memoir tells the story of a real life Tom Robinson. Hinton was accused of robbery and murder and was put on death row unjustly. Like Tom Robinson, Hinton's trial was surrounded by racism.

Many former students have read The Sun Does Shine at my recommendation and agree that this book is incredibly powerful and would be a great replacement or supplement to To Kill a Mockingbird. I feel that this story will help my current students develop a better understanding of race issues and develop empathy.
