Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is a simple one, but has multiple and complex benefits for my students. As fifth grade students preparing for middle school and facing many high stakes standardized tests, they get very little time to read for pleasure and build community.

Through the simple act of reading a quality novel together I hope to facilitate my students connecting with each other and literature.

We are luck and have many materials to help them develop skills they will need to demonstrate on tests, but in that focus we have lost a little bit of the joy of reading and I hope to balance that with a study of a novel I believe they can all relate to and discuss.

Based on my student's experiences, interests, and my knowledge of children's literature I have chosen The One and Only Ivan. Not only is this novel a Newberry winner, the themes of displacement, unlikely friendships, and finding humor in crisis directly relates to my students who, in their few years, have experienced traumatic migration experiences and still bring positivity and humor to the classroom every day. I am eager to offer them a learning experience that they can enjoy and see themselves in. We really appreciate your help!
