This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
For the upcoming school year, I will be teaching 5th and 6th-grade math and science to over 60 Chicago Public School students. Our classroom contains ESL students and diverse learners, yet we all know that we have the capacity for greatness.
While my students face many challenges, they always find the strength to overcome them.
Our classroom environment is a safe space where student engagement is fostered through respect and equity. My students know that they can take risks because they are supported every step of the way.
My Project
In a flexible seating environment, students are allowed to choose a seat that meets their needs. Some students may choose to sit on the floor, while others may want to stand at a standing desk. An environment that fosters student autonomy to make these choices builds a learning community where students are excited to learn. It also supports their basic need to move their bodies while engaging in learning.
These choices empower students to make decisions on how they want to work because when students are given the opportunities to decide how best they work, their investment in learning is authentic.
There is a growing body of research that supports flexible seating classrooms. Students that feel comfortable while learning are better collaborators and communicators. Please help my students attain that autonomy, not only with comfortable seating, but with the other materials that encourage students to become responsible for their learning.
