This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My favorite quote: "I have changed, having seen the other side of the world." My students' world is usually made up of literature from the curriculum, classic texts, or non-fiction. This book engages them in the other world of fantasy and fiction, allowing them to enjoy and have fun with reading.

My students are teenagers who enjoy texts from a variety of genres.

When I asked them what they like to read, they said: Harry Potter Books, autobiographies and mysteries. They are an eclectic group. My students have inquisitive, creative minds and are always looking to the future with goals and dreams in mind. As an inner-city school, we are lucky to have a multicultural population of students. We are a school preparing our students for college and career readiness while engaging our students in interests like community service, STEM projects, and more. As we prepare them for the future, I want to make sure they are able to read for academic needs, but I want to make sure they have a love of learning and reading when they graduate from our school.

My Project

My students will be using this book, Harrison Squared by Daryl Gregory, to engage in literature circles. Students will take on roles to facilitate discourse regarding not only the literary aspects of the text; but they will learn about persistence in the face of adversity and loss. They will also learn about what it means to face one's fears and push ahead when there is something at stake. We all have goals and dreams, but they are nothing if action and persistence are not the key ingredients in the pursuit of those goals and dreams. The main character faces loss and danger in his adventure to find his mother and bring her home. My students will engage in critical thinking, connecting the themes and concepts of the text to their lives and their future endeavors as problem-solvers and students who have embraced a growth mindset. The most important things I want my students to learn is that reading can be enjoyable, fun and educational.

We are constantly facing budget cuts in our district.

The book budget usually is not high on the list. It will improve my classroom because the students had a choice of books to read, and this was their choice. I want them to know their opinions matter. I also believe that when we foster reading for enjoyment whether independently or in the classroom, we promote life-long learning and literacy. After the books are used in my class, I want to make them available for summer reading.
