The students in my small, self-contained 3rd grade classroom, among other jobs, take turns being class librarian. Fostering independence and self-sufficiency is a goal of mine. With only one small parent-donated shelf unit, it is difficult for books to stay in any order, even though I have colored stickers on each to identify the genre: non-fiction groups like science, history, biographies, etc., picture books, fiction chapter books, reference books. I teach all subjects and am slowly acquiring books in all areas. I did not inherit any bookshelves when I got this classroom. One kind parent gave me a very narrow unit with shelves that can't be moved to accommodate taller books. That's the current home of our class library. It's not working. I am trying to teach respect for books while also teaching genre. Jamming them into one small bookcase isn't accomplishing either. We need help!! What we need is a series of low bookshelfs, something study and cheap, that will allow space to put books in color-coordinated sections or bins. This will make books more accessible to the class which means they will be read more. It will also make it easier for our class librarians to keep them organized without help from their teacher. My students love to read and would certainly appreciate this addition to our classroom ... as would their teacher!
