Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We live in an ever-increasing visual world. We are constantly exposed to images. Images are all around us...on tvs, computers, phones, newspapers, books, billboards, etc... To help my students better understand the modern world, I provide activities that foster visual literacy. Visual literacy is the ability to understand and produce visual messages. It is a staple of 21st century skills. How can we give our students 21st skills without the proper technology?
Our students are amazing!
We have some of the most creative, artistic and inspiring students around. Our students live on the Lower East Side but have roots from around the world—China, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic—just to name a few. We are an exciting bunch! Many of our students are working on learning a second language. Our school has a dual language program for Mandarin and Spanish. The diversity in our students makes for an exciting learning environment for all—especially in the art room. Our students bring their unique experiences and rich culture into everything they do. What amazing art they create! What wonderful stories they have to share!
My Project
We are a Title 1 school. All of our students receive free lunch and resources are limited. This makes it a challenge to reach the needs of all our diverse learners. Despite the obstacles my students face, they come to school eager to learn.
Currently the school's art room is in need of a new laptop computer.
The current laptop software is outdated and in need of great repair. One of the main purposes of the laptop in my art room is transfer the documents I need to teach art with onto a promethean board. The promethean board enlarges the images making it accessible for all students to observe. The enlarged images make it easier for the students to look deeply and do such things as notice details, make a judgement, ask questions, take a stance, problem solve, appreciate beauty, etc… Our students have come so far in developing their visual literacy because of the Promethean Board. For the students to continue to make progress, our school's art room needs a reliable laptop computer for the Promethean Board.
A new laptop computer gives me the ability to access the Internet in the classroom and utilize web resources. I can show video clips and interactive Internet websites. I can have the students take virtual field trips to museum all over the world.
My students also need an iPad. IPads are amazing tools for art-making and creativity. Students can engage with content in interactive ways, find information quickly, and create their own images. The camera on the iPad can help record the progress the children make in their artistic expression.
