Foster Reading Development for Our Multilingual Learners
Help me give my students decodable and bilingual books, a remote control clicker to aid in whole-class instruction, and a DVD player to show videos with closed captioning to support their English language development
My middle school students are from many countries and are eager to learn English to reach their social and academic goals. Some of my multilingual learners’ native languages include Mandarin, Korean, and Arabic. Thus, some students are new to the alphabet and English letter-sound correspondences. This project aims to provide instructional tools to help these students read, write, and speak in English.
Research has shown that an explicit, structured approach to teaching the workings of English is most efficient and effective.
As I work to implement a scientific approach to the instruction of common English patterns, a remote presentation clicker will allow me to move about the room to listen and provide coaching while I teach. Decodable books, designed with common phonetic patterns, enable students to practice text-based decoding based on the sound-letter relationships they are learning in class. These books reduce the cognitive load for students, allowing them to concentrate on decoding rather than struggling with complex or irregular words. The “decodables” on this list focus on non-fiction topics and include images to build knowledge so learners can quickly build vocabulary and background knowledge.
Bilingual books are a beneficial tool for multilingual learners—these books pair text written in English and a translation of that text into another language. Students with strong skills in their native language can leverage those skills to build strong skills in a new language. Bilingual books validate students’ current knowledge and allow them to transfer knowledge from one language to another at their own pace. Students maintain access to a broader range of reading materials, can read beyond their proficiency level in English, and learn new words while reading.
This project provides crucial tools to offer English learners a pathway to develop skills and confidence so, ultimately, these students can succeed in their educational journey.
