Fossil Analysis: Data Collection Throughout Time

Help me give my students multiple, advanced fossil collections for student observation and analysis.

My Students

Our county school is nestled in the country surrounded by pasture and cow fields and our students are eager in their quest to explore how things work together in the world around them. The school as a whole has a tenacious work ethic and my 7th and 8th grade students have a reputation for accepting challenges and breaking barriers.

These hardworking, tech savvy, data loving students deserve experiences with professional equipment as they prepare for a data-driven and computer-based future.

Data is no four letter word to us!

Egg drops? We strap on an accelerometer and measure the force they hit the ground with. Bridges? We set strict parameters, follow budgets and run controlled tests. Basketball? We map out Newton's Laws for any moment in a game. Catapults? We measure most efficient angles for various precision shots. While the students work, they compete to make the best data table and most precise graph. Anyone watching our students know that they are serious about their task of learning and exploring the world in real time. Help give them the opportunity to explore with tools that easily and instantly bring that four letter word into their hands and classroom: DATA!

My Project

Using an Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) style of teaching in my classroom, it is my goal to transform what science teaching and learning looks like so all students have an opportunity to learn how to use science and materials to figure out how the world works. (This requires an insane amount of STUFF!) WE NEED FOSSILS FOR OUR NEXT LEARNING TASK!

ADI teaching style takes the passiveness out of the classroom and brings the materials in: FOSSILS!

Students will be given the fossils for analysis, provided a critical thinking question, then in groups they are required to gather data and evidence to argue their response to the question. There's no worksheet the students can google the answers too. There's no boring notes or writing meaningless definitions students easily forget. We Are Hands On Brains On.

These students are required to OBSERVE what is in front of them, CRITICALLY THINK about what they see AND ARGUE their EVIDENCE BASED points. Thanks for reading about our project!
