My students need flexible seating to focus, be successful, and have their needs met!

My Students
My students are truly amazing. This group of children is, by far, the best class I've ever had! They are passionate, thoughtful, kind, and deserving. They are great listeners and wonderful participants. I have 13 boys and 12 girls this year, which has proved to be a great balance. Our neighborhood has a mix of ethnicities and income levels, so each child has something very special to contribute. These children LOVE to learn through being active!
I have many students with special needs this year.
They require extra support to be successful, which is extremely difficult with the budget cuts our district implements almost every year. I teach in a low-income, Title I school, where 100% of the students receive free lunch and breakfast. Despite this, ny student love being at school and are so eager to learn!
My Project
My class of 25 first graders are ACTIVE learners! I implemented the start of flexible seating last year, and it turned my students work around! I now need help finishing it up - making my classroom a true flexible seating area that meets every students needs.
With traditional seating (desks and chairs), students are forced to sit and work in a seated position, even if it doesn't serve their learning style.
My six year olds need to MOVE! When they are allowed to stand up, lay down, kneel, rock, fidget, or get comfy, all of a sudden their engagement and work production improves dramatically. Flexible seating options also give students the opportunity to explore their independence and self monitoring skills. The furniture I have chosen for this project serves this exact purpose.
The couches will allow students to sit in a comfortable spot that is just their size, or sit next to a friend while buddy reading. The comfort and support of the child sized sofa and chair will give them ample space to stretch out and do work for longer periods of time, as well as relax their bodies. The storage bench is perfect for working under the windows in a literacy, math, or listening center. And the bean bag seat will be used in a quiet area so a student can sink in with a good book or their writing journal.
Watching my students become so successful while using flexible seating has changed my whole teaching approach. I'm seeing every students' needs get met, which is very difficult to do in a low-income school. Students with tough home lives (violence, homelessness) feel safe and successful in my classroom environment. With this project funded, I can complete this safe space for all students in years to come.
