Forging Futures: Laser-Cut Designs for Career-Ready Minds

Help me give my students the tools to design, cut, and code their own drone components while exploring high-demand careers in manufacturing, transportation and technology.

My Project

My junior high students are inventive, hands-on learners who thrive when given tools that connect creativity with real-world career skills. Many come from diverse backgrounds and may not yet see how their talents can open doors to opportunities in manufacturing, transportation, or information technology. In our classroom, students already use technology to solve problems, design projects, and think like innovators; however, they need access to more advanced tools to fully unlock their potential.

This project will empower students to design, create, and code using industry-relevant tools while exploring high demand careers.

We are requesting a Glowforge filter to use our classroom Glowforge Aurora laser cutter safely and efficiently, along with plexiglass and basswood for students to cut, engrave, and assemble custom parts. Additionally, the Techvio mini drone kits and a drone obstacle course will allow students to design, customize, and program drones. Through these materials, students will gain hands-on experience in industrial manufacturing by fabricating drone components, explore transportation technology through drone delivery and logistics, strengthen coding skills in information technology, and develop craftsmanship in design and fabrication.

These resources help transform our classroom into a mini-design lab where students can bring their ideas to life and see how technology, design, and skilled trades intersect in the modern workforce. The Glowforge filter ensures safe, consistent use of our laser cutter, the materials allow them to create and iterate their designs, and the drone kits give their projects real-world purpose.

Students won’t just understand how drones and laser cutting work, they’ll know how to design, build, and program with confidence, preparing them for future opportunities in manufacturing, logistics, IT, and creative design fields. Most importantly, they’ll experience that powerful “aha” moment when they realize what they create here isn’t just a school project, it’s a step toward their future.
