My Students
Have you ever finished a book and just was DYING to know what happened next? Well, lucky for my students who have finished Chains, Laurie Halse Anderson has written a sequel, Forge.
I teach remedial reading to 9th graders at an urban high school.
My students describe themselves as "non-readers", yet they devoured the first of this trilogy, Chains. It tells the story of an African American slave in the north during the Revolutionary war. Not only did students use the book to read, write, and discuss, but they told me they "were amazed at how much they learned!" I can't wait to continue that learning with this novel!
My Project
My students will not just read, write, and respond to the novel and to each others' ideas, but they will be exposed to history. They will learn not just how to respond, but what went on during the time period of the Revolutionary War. This book was a great complement to their History classes and I can't wait to continue doing work with it. I anticipate the students creating PowerPoint presentations about the historical accuracies in the novel! I also want them to work on characterization and put themselves into the novel.
My students will be greatly impacted by reading this novel.
Not only will they become better readers by delving into a well-written book, but they will learn a lot about a time history were slavery in the north was barely mentioned in their textbooks. They loved learning about it and I can't wait to continue our discussions!
