My students need three DNA Fingerprinting forensics kits, four micropipets, three boxes of gloves, and thirty aprons.

I am a biology teacher in a small, rural, low-income school. I teach two standard biology classes and one honors biology class daily for ninety minutes a day.

There is very little money for me to purchase science supplies with. This limits the amount of laboratories that students in biology are able to perform. This in turn limits their performance in college science classes. One laboratory that students are never able to perform is DNA fingerprinting. All of our 'lab' work in done with paper and scissor simulations.

It is shameful that students are graduating high school without even a basic understanding of how this process works considering the enormous impact DNA technologies have on our society. With the purchase of three basic DNA fingerprinting kits (one for each class), simple micropipettes to transfer the DNA, and safety equipment such as gloves and aprons my students will be able to experience real laboratory techniques. This experience will allow them to broaden their job outlook and increase their higher education opportunities.
