Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you get excited every time you watch crime shows such as CSI, Bones, or NCIS? My students are learning the science behind the various fields in forensic science and need your help to be able to practice these techniques and present what they learned during a Forensic Science Family Night.
My students are located in a high poverty area in South Suburban, Illinois.
They attend a public junior high school where 98% of them receive free or reduced price lunches. In a recent survey, over 60% of my students stated an interest in careers related to STEM (science-technology-engineering-mathematics).
My Project
My students need fingerprint powder, synthetic blood, fibers, textiles, hair, minerals and soils to create a mock crime scene for their family science night. These materials will help me create mock crime scenes within my classroom that will allow the students to have a more realistic hands-on forensic experience. These items will enhance their experience and allow them to perfect their techniques prior to demonstrating them to their parents at the Forensic Science Family Night.
This project is so important as this field is one that students are very interested in and it often shapes or solidifies their passion for science.
By making the labs and activities as exciting as possible, we can help these students pursue careers and degrees not only in forensic science, but in chemistry, biology, or physics as well. A science family night will increase parental involvement which is crucial to increasing student academic success. This will help both parents and students succeed.
