Forensic Anthropology: Analysis of our Classroom Skeleton

Help me give my students the opportunity to perform forensic analysis of a skeleton.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Brandon's classroom raised $1,139

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are gifted, enthusiastic kids who thrive when given the opportunity to be creative.

This anthropology research project will allow them to analyze our classroom skeleton in order to estimate age, sex, ancestry and stature.

They will learn the techniques employed by forensic anthropologists, and have the opportunity to solve the mystery of our classroom skeleton. There will then be a creative component in which students perform facial reconstruction and write a narrative of the person's life and history.

My Project

The casts of bones and skulls will give students the opportunity to examine bones for biological markers that indicate information about characteristics of or injuries to the deceased. The instruments provided will also help students to take accurate measurements in order to estimate the age, race, stature and sex of our classroom skeleton. Students will determine whether more than one person's bones are articulated in the skeleton and will create a facial reconstruction using clay and tissue depth markers.

After completing the laboratory portion of this activity, students will present their findings in an "osteobiography," which will include the biological profile and facial reconstruction, as well as a fictitious narrative of the person's life.

This activity will combine science, art and creative writing.
