Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My elementary students are learners in Title 1 school in Carson City, Nevada. Because over 80% of student population qualifies for free/reduced lunch, our school provides free breakfast and lunch to students. Most students come from a low socioeconomic households and it's not uncommon for each classroom to have at least few students to qualify for McKinney-Vento services for individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. Many of our students' families can not provide them with extracurricular activities, home libraries, extra school supplies, or personal technological devices.
These students are extremely eager to learn!
These students love read aloud stories, 'just right' books and magazines, hands-on science (STEM/STEAM activities) and real life application (even if that means a virtual field into a rain forest). They are just as eager to build and create with math tools and manipulative as they are with Legos. They are excited to explore and make connections between their new ideas and their world. They are are very in charge of their learning and I hope to provide them tools and materials to improve the quality of it.
My Project
Science is our favorite subject, but reading books from our book boxes is our favorite time of the day. While my library consists of some books and magazines from donor choose donations and myself, I’m now looking to specifically target their love of reading AND science. All of the titles directly link up with our science standards, our project based learning, and our class magazine issues.
Our class' favorite books are National Geographic Kids readers, but our class library just does not have enough titles to meet the demands of these eager learners.
These non-fiction read-alongs will provide our classroom with rich text and high quality pictures that will excite these young readers. . These texts will excite my students and create a passion for learning in their young lives. Science will become text rich if we are provided with these non-fiction read-alongs. We will also be able to learn and understand non-fiction text features such as headings and subheadings, table of contents and index. If we had access to these non-fiction read-alongs, my students would not only be able to read about the things that interest them, but they will also be able to access content areas with fascinating and literacy rich texts.
Some of these readers have an audio cd, which means even my struggling students would have access to these texts. With several copies of some books my students could collaborate while they engage in discussions and team research. These additions to our library will extend the life of our current non-fiction and build a love of science and reading for these students for life!
