For the Love of Reading

Help me give my students an opportunity to further their learning through informational texts, high interest low level graphic novels, and social emotional picture books. Such books assist students with emotional understanding and reading engagement.

My Students

I am a librarian at a K-5 elementary school. We have AMAZING students in our school from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds varying from 1st time English language learners to middle class families. My students are energetic, intelligent, curious, and love coming to the library to select books that spark their imagination.

The school has many avid readers who enjoy graphic novels to popular book series and much more.

My Project

Students need access to high quality books. At my school, due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, the library has struggled to provide captivating and fresh titles that keep students engaged as resources had to be pooled elsewhere. By providing new informational nonfiction books, graphic novels, and social emotional learning texts, the students will now have access to materials that directly support key learning curriculum being taught in the classrooms.

Further, students will develop the skills to ask questions such as who, what, where, when, and why in a text or demonstrate understanding of literary genres.

The new materials being requested would generate student excitement to possibly identify point of view in a story or discuss how several chapters in a book fit together in a series of events.

Having such a broad range of reading levels at my school presents challenges that can be addressed through this project by updating the library catalogue to include more graphic novels for high interests low level readers. Nonfiction animal books are impactful for younger students, and fiction books that will engage middle grade readers to identify storylines, subplots, and character development.

Overall this project will meet the needs of the following Nevada Academic Content Standards: ELA RL.K.1, RI.K.4, RL.1.1, RI.1.1, RL.2.1, RI.2.1, RL.3.1, RL.4.1, RL.4.2,RL.5.5, RL.5.6
