Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach tenth-grade, Intensive Reading in a large district in Central Florida. This school is labeled as a Title One school, meaning that the school receives additional funding because of the poverty in the area. The town is known to have many non-English speaking citizens. One hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, with many getting backpacks of food to take home on the weekends. Many families are homeless, live in a hotel, or share housing with another family. The students are underprivileged but eager to learn. The students are kind and respectful towards me. Most of the students are the first in their family to graduate high school or attend college.
The students that come through my doors are willing to learn everyday.
I have a great group of students that choose to make the right choices and complete assignments. We have fun in the classroom while learning the necessary standards.
Having a positive environment around campus can influence the students to make the right choice and brighten their day.
My Project
My students are very interested in social injustice and they enjoy reading about it. With each new book that I bring into the classroom, my students remember how much they love to read. The first book I started with was "The Hate U Give", by Angie Thomas.
Angie Thomas is an amazing author that has brought the love of reading back to my students.
This book is important to continue the students' love of reading.
My students were excited to hear that Angie Thomas has a new book coming out that revisits Garden Heights.
