Help me give my students the love of reading. My students are given 20 minutes each day for silent sustained reading. My hope is that providing a class set of a current novel will engage them.
My students are an amazing and diverse group of teens that are trying to make their way in the 21st century. I work at a Title I magnet school for the arts. My students range academically from gifted to challenged. I love the way they always seem to be ready to conquer the world and will try to convince anyone along their journey that they know the way. All students are special; I believe that my main role as a teacher is to guide their unique set of skills to becoming me productive members of society.
My Project
Twenty minutes of school, every day, is set aside for silent sustained reading (SSR) and students are allowed to read their book of choice. This is to promote the joy and love of reading. However, most students do not bring a book to class which creates behavior problems and a riff between the students and teacher. They don't see the point and get frustrated at having to read something they don't care about. I want to change that. The book I have chosen for this project is engaging and new. I believe the students will respond in a more positive manner to SSR if they are all reading the same book and it will promote active dialogue in class.
