For the Love of Reading!

My students need high quality books that will foster a love of reading. A student's future depends on good literacy skills and reading skills comes from reading practice. Book clubs and class libraries are a must!

My Students

My students live in a neighborhood afflicted by poverty. Parents work two to three jobs and are frequently over-qualified for the positions they have. Parents do all they can but the demands of providing for housing and food often leave families strapped to provide the "extra enrichment" of zoo trips, new release books, educational camps or summer programs, or even after school activities. The students in my class face many harsh realities of a life of poverty. Despite the uncertainty of their home lives, the classroom provides them encouragement, stability, and crucial skills.

Student's natural curiosity will fade if they are not not stimulated to untangle the marvels in the world around them through literature.

Research is documenting the hardship poverty creates in education. Over 51 percent of students in our school receive free or reduced meals and a third of them are native Spanish speakers. These are my students and they desire to build a better life for themselves.

In class we experience the wonder of nature, the motivating drive of curiosity, and the self-confidence of mastery. No one needs this kind of life changing, first-hand experience more than under-privileged students.

My Project

School is most challenging for struggling readers. I am convinced that just the right book can inspire students to love reading. Because reading improves only through practice, it is essential to match readers to books that motivate them to read.

Books have the potential to delight and entice children to endless hours of reading.

By providing time-honored classics and fresh tantalizing titles in the classroom, I can drum up a reading frenzy. Children excite each other to read when they experience a intriguing, new-found, favorite author. I am driven to search out and provide those novels and non-fiction books for my students!
