My Students

A typical day in my classroom consists of 32 fourth and fifth graders developing the tools they need to become successful adults. Through collaboration, technology, and a "No Excuses" attitude, my students work hard to achieve their goals and excel in their academics.

Our one goal at my school is that every student, without exception and without excuse, will be proficient or advanced in reading, language arts, and math.

37% of the students at my school are English language learners and 41% are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Even though my students face many challenges, they know that the teachers at my school believe there is no limits to their academic success. My students come to school every Monday wearing a t-shirt with the words "No Excuses" printed on the front, and each day they model that behavior by working hard and achieving their academic goals.

My Project

This classroom library will allow my students to check out a new book as often as they need to for at-home reading. They will have choice in what books they read, which has been proven to increase both reading ability and a love of reading for life. My students are currently begging for books to bring home, and their parents are too! These families WANT to read, and they WANT to learn—they just need to have have easy access to books. My students will learn how to develop their own reading preferences, understand genre, and make connections between books they've read. They will also have the opportunity to share their experiences with the books and make recommendations to other students. As they dig into the books, I plan to have them write book reviews, which will be accessed through scannable QR codes. This will allow them to also develop their writing and technology skills.
