My students need books! There is no better way to engage reluctant readers than to introduce them to great literature. They need to see that reading can be fun, not just something they have to do.

My Students

I have twenty-one fabulous fourth grade students! They are a diverse group of learners, representing many different backgrounds and cultures.

These students live in a rural community located in a high poverty county, but their dreams are not limited by these constraints.

They are dreaming big and the future has no limits for them. They love learning and have gotten very interested in STEM because of our STEM initiative. Many of them may not have chosen a college track, but because of their interest in STEM, they now talk about college and the careers they want to pursue. It is so exciting to think that they are already opening their minds to future possibilities because of what they are doing in the classroom. I want them to fall in love with all subject areas as much as they have for STEM.

My Project

I want my students to learn how to read for pleasure. So many of them see reading as a chore, but I think they just haven't found the right books. I want to use novel sets to change their mind. Exposing them to high interest literature is a great way to do this.

Another benefit these novels would have is that my students would get an opportunity to actually read.

Our current reading program doesn't provide opportunities for the students to read much text on a daily basis. They would benefit greatly from reading an entire book rather than just short excerpts.
