Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The community of City Heights is rich in diversity and allows for students on engage with many other cultures. My class is full of 5th grade students who want to learn and have the materials that will allow them to do so. My students range from Somali student new to this country to students who have been attending school since TK.

The class consists of over 75% English language learners and all students receive free lunch and breakfast in the classroom.

My Project

Students will use these books to participate in book clubs during their reading program. Students will choose a high interest text and complete the book with their group. These groups will meet with the teacher daily to share their thoughts and questions about the book.

When students read together and discuss they develop a love for reading.

Students will read and use strategies they learned during the lesson to truly understand and comprehend the book. Some strategies they will attempt are character traits, summarizing, compare and contrast, inferences, theme, and inner conflict of characters. Not only will this engage students verbally, but students will also respond by writing about their books. This gives students the opportunity to listen, respond, speak, and write.
