This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Although my classroom is the math room, it is still filled with reading! Students read and borrow books every day, because they know that reading is important for all subjects. They are working hard to reach their reading goals for the year and reach grade level proficiency with their reading.

My students are now full fledged READERS!

They are now reading books for fun instead of reading because they are told to do so. I want to encourage them as much as possible with new and exciting books. I teach at a dual language school where my students learn in English and in Spanish. Because of the dual language nature, they have to read twice as much in order to keep up with both languages. They have been encouraged to read all year by all of their teachers but have gotten to the point where they are sneaking their books out of their desk during instruction time because they love them so much! My students are happy, lively, excited fourth graders. Even though they come from poverty, they come to school ready to learn and eager to do well.

My Project

My students need more Spanish books for our classroom library. My students are working hard every day to improve their reading ability. Some have started the year as much as two and a half grade levels behind their expected fourth grade level in reading. However, they have not given up and are constantly reading to improve their fluency and comprehension. Due to their commitment to reading every day, many of them are running out of original books to read. My students are constantly asking me if I have any new books for them to read, which as a teacher I consider a tremendous blessing that my students are so eager to read! These books will help these fourth graders on their pursuit of reading proficiency.

The achievement gap for students of poverty is a literacy gap.

In order to succeed academically and be prepared to reach their life goals, students need to be strong readers. By providing more books for students, their literacy will continue to grow and prepare them for success both inside and outside the classroom.
