"Read more!" "No! You can't stop there!" "Can I read ahead? Please?" These are typical reactions when read aloud ends in my class each day. Everyday I try to stop at the most suspenseful parts of the book so that the students are hungry for more the next day. I teach a fourth and fifth grade multi-age class in Durham, NC. I include read aloud as part of our schedule EVERYDAY for many reasons. Here are a few: 1) The students get to see what a seasoned reader should sound like, so that when they are reading independently they can try to model that "sound" in their heads. 2) I model the kind of thinking that an experienced reader has when reading to himself. I ask aloud the questions that someone might ask himself while reading. For instance, "I wonder why the author included that detail?" or "Can I make a prediction about how this conflict will be resolved" 3) I often use read aloud books to supplement something that we are learning in another subject. I may use a book to demonstrate a particular writing technique or one that connects to a social studies, math, or science unit. 4) FOR THE LOVE OF READING!! This is truly the most important part as far as I am concerned. I show the kids that I am excited about the story which helps them to be excited as well. I also read books that some of my students would have difficulty reading independently simply to share a great story that they may not hear otherwise. When I read to the kids, I love for them to read along with a copy of the book. This helps them to improve their own fluency. For many of the books that I read, I do not have multiple copies of the titles. I am asking for 10 copies of each of the following fantastic books: Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism Hoot The Wish Giver Shiloh The Witches Thank you so much for considering this proposal. You will truly be making a difference in the lives of my students by funding it. After all... a love for reading will last a lifetime.
