This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a group of fun, energetic, curious, creative, and loving first graders. They are constantly learning and growing and are thirsty to learn more.

I teach in a bilingual classroom.

All of my students are native Spanish speakers and are learning to read and write in Spanish, before transferring those literacy skills over to English when they get to third grade. Our goal is that our students will graduate from fifth grade both bi-literate and bilingual in Spanish and English. Giving my students opportunities to read and write in their native language will increase their chances of becoming proficient in both languages by the time they graduate.

My Project

I play music every day in my classroom. I use it in different ways. I use it to both calm my students down, and to stimulate them. My students read and write on a daily basis. I always play calming music while they read and write, which allows me to create a serene environment where students can both focus, and also be creative. I also use music for Brain Breaks. I put music on and allow students to dance around the room. I use music to signify that it's time to clean up. I use music throughout the day.

My students need a bluetooth speaker so they can hear the music while they are working.

Oftentimes, I play music from my phone, but students have difficulty hearing it, and it doesn't create the serene environment I am hoping to create for my students. Music is really important in influencing the mood of the group. Having a speaker to play music at a higher volume will allow me to create an environment where my students can both focus on their independent work, but also so they can get their wiggles out and energize their brains and their bodies to become better learners.
