My Students
"Do we have to do math today?" This is the question I'm asked on a daily basis. When it's time to start our math lesson, my students start to grumble and sigh. They don't think it's fun and don't understand how it applies in their life.
I teach at a high poverty school in Oklahoma.
My school has about 230 students in a building that teaches kindergarten through fifth grade. I have 21 wonderful first graders. They are curious, energetic, and have a thirst for knowledge. I'm blessed that the parents of my students are very involved in the education of their children.
My Project
My students need books to help make math fun, to help them grasp concepts more easily, and to help them connect math to their daily lives. By using these books, my young readers will be introduced to math that is fun and inviting. The books that I need will make concepts easier to grasp and are perfect for building early math literacy. They also help students to connect math to their daily lives. These books focus on math concepts and show real-life kids using math to solve real-world, child-sized situations.
These books will give me the opportunity to incorporate nonfiction into teaching mathematics.
Children’s literature should play a vital role in mathematics instruction at all grade levels. Too often teachers rely only on textbook and workbook exercises to teach math. This will not spark students’ imagination, nor will it instill a love of learning in them. Students need more hands-on learning.
