Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a predominantly low income neighborhood that is ridden with gangs and violence. Our school is a safe haven for these kids. The teachers and staff at our school always work as a team, and our focus is always student centered to ensure these kids get the chances they deserve. They come to school excited for opportunities to learn and consistently surprise me with doing the absolute best they can!
My students are inquisitive, thoughtful, intelligent, and kind!
This year, I am fortunate enough to teach Math, Science and Social Studies. With this setting, I am able to devote the necessary time needed to each subject, particularly Science and Social Studies which often are neglected due to the increased pressures of high stakes testing.
My Project
My goal is to create a science and engineering rich classroom that allows my students to have a safe place of creative exploration to imagine, plan, construct, analyze, and question. The high quality texts will introduce my students to the Engineering Design Process in a way that will promote perseverance, teamwork, and healthy competition! The various materials such as Magformers, legos, Keva planks, and Goldiblox will be used for STEM challenges, unstructured free play, and small group centers.
With these materials, my scholars will be able to view themselves as real world engineers and scientists!
Through purposeful play and unique challenges, students are becoming critical thinkers and innovators, all while collaborating with their peers.
