My Project

High interest books covering popular topics in readable, high interest formats will increase my students' time in independent reading. This in turn will improve their overall reading and writing skills and cultivate a culture of reading in our school.

As students are given a choice to check out books that resonate with them, they will read more often and for greater lengths of time.

My student population struggles with reading and writing skills and are on average, two years behind their grade level in reading. Many of our students also have English as a second language. More time reading high interest, low readability books will improve their skills as well as reaffirm students' identities as readers.

The requested books cover their favorite topics of sports, humor, animals, and friends. Students will check out, read, and discuss characters and story plots with their friends and will want to share their books with each other as they come back for the next one in the series.

Through book choice and independent reading practice, students will develop

their own sense of reading self and will carry a positive reading identity with them toward a lifetime of literacy.
