My Students
I am a special educator at a Title I elementary school. This year I co-teach in PreK and 4th-grade classrooms. My students have varying disabilities such as autism, intellectual, and specific learning disabilities. One common problem I face is having differentiated resources to fit their specific needs. As a special educator, I am required to provide reading intervention services to my students. To provide the best support, I would love access to lessons that align with the science of reading so my students can have the best opportunity for growth and learning.
My Project
Reading is an essential part of a students academic success. Most, if not all, subjects rely heavily on reading skills. Many of my 4th graders are reading on Kindergarten- 1st grade reading levels so differentiated instruction is crucial for my students to build up their confidence and independence.
There is no one area in the brain responsible for reading.
The task of reading involves multiple cognitive processes without our brain organization systems. The dyslexic brain has a different processing system which is why it is so important to have lessons that fit each of my students specific needs. This project will give my students access to multi-sensory decoding (reading) and encoding (writing) lessons.
Since my students require differentiated lessons tailored to their specific needs I often need to provide lessons and resources past what our curriculum offers. These TeachersPayTeachers gift cards will help me provide my students with engaging lessons that provide my student with hands on lessons, such as syllable type game boards. I plan on using this for my phonemic and phonological awareness lessons that my students need in order to catch up to their peers.
