This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."-Dr. Seuss.
My special needs students face many challenges in learning to read.
One challenge we face is not having technology such as a listening center to support their auditory learning styles.
My students are in a 12:1:1 Self-Contained Second Grade Special Education program in a Title 1 funded public school. My students work hard each and every day towards achieving the same academic goals as their general education peers. The disabilities of my students range from Autism, Learning Disabled and Speech and Language Impaired. My students love books and browsing the classroom library. My students frequently ask me to read and reread their favorite stories!
My Project
Currently, I do not have a listening center in my classroom. I believe this listening center and audio books would reinforce learning in all academic domains. Having a listening center in our classroom would allow my students to read and listen to their favorite stories. My students would gain skills such as building a sight vocabulary, developing their listening skills and fostering independence. A classroom listening center would enable my students to gain exposure to a variety of story structures. Multiple students will be able to sit and listen to a story together.
Students with diverse learning needs should have the resources and materials to support their individual learning styles.
Unfortunately, there is no funding available for such necessary items. My students would greatly benefit from having a classroom listening center and audio books to support their emerging reading skills. A listening center and audio books to support their unique auditory learning styles.
