My students need footballs, soccer balls, goals, flags and how to books so that they can compare and contrast American football and soccer in an interactive and engaging way!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Si se puede" is the slogan we have in my transitional bilingual classroom in Trenton, New Jersey. By providing opportunities for students of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, these curious learners can believe that their goals are possible to achieve.

All my students have immigrated to the United States in order to access both economic and educational advantages that exist here.

Their limited English proficiency is not limiting their desire to learn. They are eager to learn the required curriculum as they are developing their skills in the English Language.

Since these students have been in the country for no more than three years and most have been here for less than a year, it is important that they participate in engaging and authentic activities to acquire their new language with confidence. As their teacher, I strive to provide them with an educational environment that foster this growth!

My Project

Learning a new language and adapting to a new culture can be a very challenging and exhausting task. I can sympathize with my students because as a returned Peace Corps Volunteer, I too had a similar experience that has guided me to where I am today. For this reason, I would like to bring a little fun into their learning of the English language. With the recent Super Bowl, many of the students celebrated the great success of our closest American Football Team the Philadelphia Eagles. Today, I would like to bring their success into our class by comparing the sport of the Eagles with the sport my students love soccer.

This project will benefit my student because it will provide them with interactive, developmental, academic time focusing on language acquisition through structured play!

Students will learn vocabulary related to the sports of American football and soccer. They will learn the details of the game through rules, positions, and equipment. They will make comparisons between these two sports through details in text and interactive play of the sports. They finally will examine reasons why we have to modify American football in our play to that of flag football making students away of the need to play safe.
