My Project
This year, our lunch schedule has changed to spread students out more. In order to accommodate ten different grade levels in our building, lunchtimes had to be pushed back to later into the afternoon than ever before. My students start our school day at 7:50 and don't have lunch until 12:30. Many students run out of time to eat breakfast before school too, leaving them quite hungry during our long morning.
Most days, students begin asking if it is time for lunch two hours before their lunch starts.
Having snacks to enjoy at recess will help my students focus on their learning, not their hungry bellies, during the morning. Sometimes families are able to contribute snacks at my school, but it is not always consistent. I do not want to put that burden on families who are struggling to put food on their own tables at home. It will be a relief to know I can guarantee my students have something to hold them over until lunch.
