What better way to motivate anyone than to offer food? When I reached the end of my rope and ideas, I realized the students with whom I counseled as an elementary counselor, naturally opened up and were more comfortable over lunch. These children may be at-risk, depressed, working below grade level or perhaps just stuck in a rut! Many students eat with me now for rewards, incentives or just refuge from a bad day. I decided to try another approach with food. I try to maintain behavior/academic contracts throughout the year with candy/snacks/trinkets being the prizes they earn. Instead of adding "tokens", "smiley faces", or "checks" to charts monitoring good behavior, completed homework or classwork, I could begin adding pictures of ingredients to a child's chart. The ingredients could be added until the child had enough to make and bake a symbol of the season: October-apple pie, November-pumpkin pie,December-gingerbread cookies. etc. The baking activity would be the final reward. Many students I counsel need to see immediate rewards, thus, the picture ingredients. The baking would be the goal they earned. I have taught/counseled for 24 years now and food will motiviate any child. Also, cooking activities bring out the best in any child. The children I see need to feel a part of something and cooking is a wonderful way to be involved and part of something. They can share their creations with the principal, a favorite teacher or even the school food service director! Their pride will shine when they present their creations, adding to a much needed sense of self-esteem. Also, they will cultivate a sense of ingredients, cost, energy and time involved in creating a masterpiece!
