My Students

The DCC is the only place on campus for students to slow down, relax, seek safety, rest, breathe, talk, and not be judged all at the same time. As a result, our students often enter the door in fight or flight mode, highly agitated or in need of major emotional support. Our students are among the most eager, vulnerable, sensitive and delicate students of the entire campus.

Our students typically gravitate to our school based health center for a sense a of community and safety during the madness of a typical school day.

In a high school made up of roughly 1,500 students, there are few places of refugee and calm. However, this is what we hope to offer in the DCC each day!

My Project

Students enter our doors each and every day for a myriad of reasons. From homesickness of their birth country and bullying, to anger management and emotional problems. Our students seek our center as a safe place on campus; not to mention our lunch time and after school regulars who use our space primarily to hang out, socialize with friends, complete academic projects and work on daily homework assignments.

The reality is many of our students come into our center very hungry!

This is why we like to offer our on campus community center as an alternative to home. A new refrigerator will allow us to store healthy fruits and vegetables from our Hospitality and Tourism Academy and provide students with a healthy snack option.

Our kids will love this refrigerator filled with healthy food choices, which will be an alternative to some of the horrific snacks often eaten by teens, dare I mention the words 'Hot Cheetos'. Our goal is to educate our students about wellness and nutrition by modeling and providing healthy food options. Not to mention, students will be able to store their lunches in our fridge too.

Currently we have a twenty plus year old fridge that unfortunately, has molded over the summer. We are hoping this new fridge will not only replace our current dilapidated one, but fill stomachs and spark healthy eating lifestyles as well!
