This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This fall, I began teaching eighteen energetic, amazing and fabulous first graders in an urban, PreK-8th grade school. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch, and many of them come from families that are living well below the poverty line.
They are all so special because they always come to school with smiles on their faces, eager and ready to learn, no matter what the circumstances.
A normal school day seems short for most of us, but for 18 first graders it can seem like forever. Even though they receive free breakfast and lunch, the remaining five hours of the day can be difficult when they are still hungry.
An assortment of chips, crackers, and cereal bars will help keep my students focused on learning, rather than on being hungry.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
