Reading is a critical skill needed for lifelong success. Our students work incredibly hard to become stronger readers. Many of our students are reading well below grade level, but show up every day and give their best effort. We are fortunate to have a diverse group of students, but many of our students face daily challenges that can impact their ability to learn.
Nevertheless, they continue to be present and contribute to our school community.
Their resilience and persistence is inspiring.
When asked what their biggest barrier to learning was, many of my students responded that they were hungry and needed food. I started buying snacks for the classroom and it was incredible to see the transformation. Students are more engaged, in a better mood, and even coming to check in throughout the day or just stopping by to say hi! Food insecurity is a reality for many of our students, but by providing snacks, students are given the nourishment they need to succeed. Snacks are not only helping improve their focus and engagement, but it is also helping to create strong relationships.
