Food for Thought

Help me give my students healthy snacks and brightly colored certificates as motivators to work hard and succeed in reading class.

My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade reading to students who began the year saying how much they hate to read, that they would rather do anything than read. However, they also are saying they would like to read, write and spell better.

In previous years, students with the same attitude have made great strides in reading, writing and thinking and I trust these children will as well.

My students are working on an online reading program at their individual levels as well as engaging in oral reading fluency groups. They really enjoy Philosophy for Children--the community building and inquiry we do as a class. This year, we are in the middle of reading the Adams Family Musical and last month we attended the performance at the local high school. All of these activities are geared to help students develop an appreciation for reading as well as to improve their reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension. We are seeing great results this year!

My Project

I have students who must give up an elective to take a reading class because they struggle with reading. I try to make the reading interventions class positive by providing flexible cozy seating, multiple content related field trips and activities and by providing a creative and interactive reward system. The kids can earn a variety of things including the snacks that I am asking for in this project.

They earn points for a variety of behaviors and accomplishments and the snacks provide them with sustenance and a way to have fun together.

Often, they buy one another snacks with their points. It is a very community oriented class! We also have a running contest regarding leveling up in the program and I would like to continue printing their certificates in bright colors to put up in the room as well as to give them a copy to take home and share with family. The students appreciate both the food and the certificates.
