My Students
Our school is part of one of the largest urban public schools in the district of Pittsburgh, attracting students from diverse communities throughout the city. It is a Title I school. The student body is approximately 50% Caucasian and 50% African American/other minorities. What is special about my French/Spanish students? Every student is of course special -- eager to learn a language; contributing to the class in a variety of ways due to the richness of their varying backgrounds. They are not afraid to put themselves out there... to sing and dance to help better interiorize the language.
My Project
Every month I spend easily far more than $100.00 on a variety of food for my students – primarily for healthy snack bars for the kids who tend go without breakfast or lunch. Every day (mostly in the mornings) kids approach me asking if I have anything to eat... usually they have not eaten breakfast (or have eaten chips) or it is well after lunchtime (our first lunch period begins at 10:30!!!), and the students are again hungry.
Missing meals and experiencing hunger impair children's development, concentration, and achievement.
... Hungry children have lower test scores, and are more likely to repeat a grade, come to school late, or miss school entirely. Eating breakfast simply helps children perform better.
Studies show that children from homes that lack consistent access to food are more likely to experience developmental impairments in areas like language, motor skills, and behavior. Students need nutrients so they can focus on learning instead of thinking about their growling stomachs.
It has been well documented/tested that hunger significantly affects a students’ performance, engagement, mood, focus, etc. In providing healthy snacks bars I hope to help boost my students’ focus, mood, and energy level.
