Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Welcome to our classroom! We are a Montessori classroom in the heart of Englewood in the south side of Chicago. The Montessori model combines three different grade levels in one classroom. Our students ages range from 6 to 9 years (first through third grade). This fosters a self-directed and democratic community and encourages leadership and collaborative learning. The combined levels also means that our school operates on three-year cycles, therefore fostering strong bonds and relationships among students. Our classroom has become like a family. We spend years learning and growing together, helping each other through challenges and sharing in our celebration of accomplishments. My students love to sing and dance, write stories, read, and each year put on a theater performance. They study capoeira every week and serve as teachers to each other. Everyday each child devises their own work plan, putting into practice the Montessori's vision of self-directed, child-centered and empowered learning. The Montessori materials, curriculum and manipulatives are all hands-on.

My Project

Some members of our community experience food insecurity at home. Like many other neighborhoods in Chicago and in cities throughout the United States known to be "food deserts", it can be hard to find enough sources of wholesome nutritious food in Englewood. The snack routine is an integral part of the Montessori work cycle and we want each child to have equal chance at having snack. We are hoping to integrate this tradition into our classroom and provide children the opportunity to take a break from their work while building practical life skills in preparing their snack. Your contribution to this project will help ensure that we are stocked with non-perishable healthy foods that will help children power their brains to work during their morning work cycle.
