Follow the Trail! Termite Pheromones

Help me give my students two kits that contain live termites to help us study social interactions of termites and the pheromones they leave in their trail.

My Students

Our school is an academically successful, rural high school that is filled to the brim with about 900 wonderful students. We serve our military community. Our students are smart, athletic, and driven to succeed.

In the state's ranking system, our high-performing high school has been ranked as a top ten public high school in NC for eleven consecutive years.

We are proud of our success in the classroom.

On September 13, 2018, our community was hit hard by Hurricane Florence. Again, in 2019, we were hit by Hurricane Dorian. Although the hurricanes might have re-shaped us, they won't define us. Even though the storms seem so long ago, some of us are still in recovery mode. We were "CarteretStrong" then and my students remain that way now: strong, resilient, and flexible.

And now, we are dealing with a pandemic and distance learning.

My Project

This project is requesting 2 kits that will help students understand more about the termite. Each kit is an investigative study of the social behavior and hierarchy of the termite and the colony in which it resides. Students will use the kit supplies (brushes and ink pens) to leave a trail that live termites, included with the kit, might follow.

Students should discover that live termites leave a pheromone trail so the others in their colony will know where to go!

Interestingly, some inks mimic pheromones. They will compare different brands of pens and inks. Next, the class will find our own termites on a local nature trail to compare the results of the lab-grown termites and those that we find. (I have also included some mints for my students as mask breath is real!)

This project is taking a look at a very important insect! One that is very destructive to deadwood in the environment, but also one that is devastating to the wood used in our structures. Won't you help us with our project?
