Have you always been the organized one? Or have you been more the thrive-in-chaos, creative type? Overwhelmingly, my students fall into the latter category and unfortunately, it's not good for them academically. This folder system is key for them getting organized and being successful.
My students are 97% free/reduced lunch and 90% minority.
Because of Katrina, they have attended more schools than we can count. One of the longer term implications of Katrina has been this disruption in their education and unfortunately, many of my students are severely behind. This means we have one school year ahead to make about 3 years of academic growth on average. Making sure students are on top of keeping all of their class materials, filing away notes and handouts to review, and staying organized is key for achieving this kind of rapid pace academic growth. It is not only critical that they learn quickly, but that they retain all the information (and class materials) that we cover in order to continuously review spiraled material and study for our cumulative end-of-year exam.
I'm requesting 150 two-pocket folders in order to give each of my students their own individual folder for my class and launch a folder organization system. Students will keep their class notes and current homework in one pocket and their returned homework/graded tests and classwork in the other. This is key: unfortunately, many students do not have access to the school supplies they need to be ready to succeed in my class. They need to keep their notes and exams organized in order to study and be successful. This folder system is key!
It's not just about being able to demonstrate what we learned today, but also showing that you remember what we learned yesterday, last month, and even last semester!
Students need help staying on top of their materials so that they can continuously study and review everything we have learned. This folder system will help students stay organized and most importantly, retain and review everything we learn (3 years of material at a very quick pace) over the course of the year.
