Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with middle school students who are struggling readers. My students read several years below grade-level and struggle with vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension.
Our school is designated a high-needs school, as students and the school itself have limited resources and our need to increase academic gains is high.
Students need a great deal of support and encouragement to make strides in their achievement. I am excited that students may receive resources that will engage them in their learning.
My Project
My students are struggling readers in middle school. I am implementing a reading intervention program that will require students to save their work-in-progress in a two-pocket folder with plastic outside sleeves. Last year, through the use of two-pocket folders kept in the classroom, my students were able to stay highly organized. I believe this contributed to their success in increasing their Lexile scores, which are their reading levels in reading intervention class. Teaching students to keep work-in-progress in an orderly fashion in two-pocket folders helped my students to develop good work habits and contributed to their overall success in the reading intervention program that they participated in.
