My Project

When my students walk into the Design Crafts classroom, they know it’s a place where differences can disappear and creativity can come alive! Here is a place of discovery and experimentation, where they can create side-by-side—no matter their backgrounds, abilities, or challenges.

I’m lucky to teach in an ethnically diverse school where art is our shared language.

My classroom brings together gifted students, English language learners, and children with special needs—all discovering common ground through hands-on, multicultural projects. In our space, every student can design, build, and create, experiencing the magic of making something beautiful with their own hands.

Every year, for many years, our second Design Crafts unit focuses on origami—a project that never fails to surprise my middle schoolers. Origami is one of the most challenging projects I introduce them to, and at first, many are convinced it’s too difficult. But after folding their first Secret Letter into its own self contained envelope, or balancing a Penguin they folded on their desk, or creating a star shaped box, they experience a spark of joy and the pride of mastering something new. Almost overnight, students are buzzing with excitement as they enter the classroom, now eager to transform flat sheets of paper into all sorts of imaginative creations and geometric configurations.

Truly, origami is so much more than folding paper. It really does open a door to creativity, encouraging students to focus, to be persistent, with the hope of turning a piece of paper into something extraordinary. Origami may start with a single sheet, but it unfolds into something far greater: a belief in their own ability to turn challenges into beauty.
