Do you remember what it was like being six and seven years old? My first graders have a hard time containing all of their energy and sitting in a regular chair for daily instruction.
My students are from a retirement community, in which many families have moved in with grandma and grandpa.
Many of the children are being raised solely by grandparents. They are growing as readers and need every possible asset to help them gain knowledge as learners. Some do not receive the support at home to be the best they can be. Our school is a public school with kindergarten through second grade attending and we have about 150 students.
My Project
These stability balls will allow the first graders to sit at a reading table and focus on reading. The regular chairs hinder their learning, as it is one more time when they have to sit still. First graders like to move around, so the stability balls will allow them to move and learn at the same time!
The project is important as I am trying to move towards a more child friendly class.
I would like to offer alternative seating to the students, rather than a typical chair from 8:00 to 3:00. This will allow all students to try their hardest but will also allow an extra boost for those who just "can't" sit still!
