My Students
My students come from all walks of life, creating a diverse classroom where they learn from one another on a daily basis. I want them to grow up to be critical thinkers and life-long learners who are compassionate, empathetic, and cognizant of anyone and everyone. The students who I have the pleasure of teaching are absolutely amazing. I may be partial, but they are thoughtful teenagers who are going to change the world.
It is time to invest in their futures now, by bringing them the best educational tools to help them succeed in their current and future endeavors in order to create innovative leaders of the future with social-emotional intelligence to build their character, kindness, mindfulness, and empathy.
I try to do this every day, but it really does take a village!
My Project
Many of my students have a lot of energy that they need to expend through the day. Some of the energy is the stuff toddlers live on, lots of movement through the day, but in bigger middle school bodies. The strain of keeping their bodies still throughout the school day is often too much and results in unexpected behaviors or distractions. Other energy is anxious energy. The idea of sitting in a classroom with other students is the last thing some of my students want to do, but their drive to succeed often makes them push themselves, resulting in tapping, scratching, bouncing or an inability to stay sitting.
All of these tools will be the start of a toolbox of items and strategies to help all of my students be able to sit in a classroom and attend to what is being taught, while not being distracting to others in the room.
A stress ball or a bike chain fidget can help stop a tapping pencil. A wiggle seat cushion can provide just enough bounce to prevent or postpone the need for a walk until after the lesson is finished. These little things can be the difference between disappointment or failure and success and a feeling of mastery.
